Summary: Oh, how long does it take for a boy to figure things out, anyway?
.on a magic carpet ride.
----------
As many times as he thinks this over, he really can't understand. He tried different angles of approach, tried unusual (for him, at least) methods of research, even tried asking his friends for advice - which he knew was a mistake as soon as the words were out of his mouth. He ended up enduring a week's worth of teasing comments and shared knowing smirks that went right over his head. But now he's terribly frustrated over the whole ordeal, and he can't be bothered to try and work things out on his own anymore, so he does what he should have done from the start - he goes to the source.
----------
"You know what, I think you're trying to rationalize something extremely simple, my dear ChangMin."
The amused voice does nothing to help the scowl off his face, and he turns narrowed eyes to the boy in front of him.
"Don't patronize me, YooChun. All I'm asking is why. And believe me when I say, it's not an easy question to answer, concerning whom I'm dealing with." He gives a slight sniff - how dare the other treat him as a child? As if he didn't get that sort of attitude enough!
"Ouch." YooChun brings a hand to his chest and makes a mock-hurt face. "Right to the core, I see." With an easy smile, he turns to look to the window on his right. The motion seems casual, but to an attentive observer, there's a sudden tension on his posture.
ChangMin - hawk eyes that he seems to have - catches the change but gets not why YooChun would be tense. He tilts his head to the side, turning things inside his mind. "Just tell me why, YooChun. You sent me flowers and I'm nowhere near close to understanding why you did so. Are you trying to mock me?" ChangMin narrows his eyes even further - if that's the case, obviously YooChun needs to be reminded of whom he's dealing with.
Still looking outside, YooChun laughs. "Of course not." He turns and catches ChangMin's gaze. "I'm an easy and simple-minded guy. But-" he smirks a little, and his features change to amusement, "-just so you don't think I haven't earned the right to be in the house I'm in, I'll leave you to figure it out on your own."
His school robes flair out behind him as he walks out the door, and ChangMin almost gapes at him - damn those Slytherins.
----------
Frustrated beyond belief, but unable to let things go as is his wont, ChangMin skips his last class of the day (as much as it pains him, it's Arithmancy after all) and searches for JaeJoong. He's YooChun's best friend anyway, he might shine some light on the yet unresolved matter.
He finds the boy on his usual spot, an out of the way unused classroom that manages, at the same time, to be on the second and fourth floor. ChangMin once tried to figure that out, but gave up - another frustration - as some magic can be confusing even for a boy like him. Something about accidents and unseen consequences of once trying to change the Hogwarts layout was the simplest explanation he could come up with.
JaeJoong sits with his back to the wall, one leg spread out in front of him, the other close to his body, one arm propped on it. His robes and tie are a bundle on the ground and he watches the ceiling with intense concentration, a cigarette dangling from his fingers, forgotten. ChangMin rolls his eyes seeing that, but figures it best not to say a thing if he wants the boy's cooperation - plus, YunHo will eat JaeJoong's liver if he finds out, something ChangMin knows well, and that might happen by form of an anonymous note sent by a school owl.
Of course, ChangMin smirks, only if JaeJoong doesn't collaborate.
Stopping in front of the boy, ChangMin crouches down to JaeJoong's level, and only them the other realizes who's in front of him. Turning his eyes from the ceiling - another magical feature, only this one made by JaeJoong himself and charmed to show the Quidditch pitch - JaeJoong gives ChangMin a curious glance, made even more pronounced after he quickly casts a spell to show the time.
"You're skipping class, changMin?" He asks, with an amazed voice. "Something must be seriously wrong." JaeJoong gives the other a grin. "If it's mischief, can I help?"
ChangMin almost snorts, but restrains himself and merely gives the other a long look. "Of course." He says slowly. "As soon as you stop perving on your boyfriend by enchanting walls to show him during his Quidditch practice."
JaeJoong scowls and, suddenly remembering the cigarette and taking a drag from it, blows out the smoke on ChangMin's face. "Did you come here just to piss me off, genius boy?"
ChangMin coughs, and wonders, once more, why he's friend with this particular boy - he can be so childish, really! He feels vindicated though, knowing he's got the advantage here. "Come of it, JaeJoong. I have a question and I think you might have the answer." ChangMin gives the other a piercing gaze. "Why would YooChun send me flowers?"
After a long silent moment in which neither move, JaeJoong raises and eyebrow. "I take it back. You're no genius. Are you sure that's a legitimate question, ChangMin? You're having me on, right?", he asks in a suspicious voice.
Not managing to disguise his pout, ChangMin sulks. "Of course not. I don't joke about things I don't know. And I wouldn't ask if I already knew the answer, obviously."
An amused sound escapes JaeJoong's throat, and suddenly the boy is bent over his body, laughing out of control. He loses it so much that the already wavering image on the ceiling blinks off and still he doesn't stop. A good couple of minutes go by like that, until ChangMin can't stand being made fun of anymore and stands up to walk away.
JaeJoong stops then, and with a small smirk throws the butt of the - now spent - cigarette at the back of ChangMin's head, hitting him right in the middle of it. The boy turns around to yell at him - ChangMin keeps reminding himself he is the superior here, the one with potential blackmail material - just to be confronted with the sight of a smiling JaeJoong and losing all train of thoughts.
Getting up as well, JaeJoong dust himself off, and after gathering his clothes from the floor, he amusedly looks at ChangMin again. "You're such a silly boy sometimes, ChangMin. You know the answer to that question already, you're just in denial."
JaeJoong again laughs at ChangMin's outraged face, and just as the boy is working up to a full rant, he speaks again. "Just don't be in denial forever, okay? You might be losing on a good thing." JaeJoong pats ChangMin on the shoulder as he walks by him, and the un-amused face of the boy brings back the smirk to his own face. As he nears the door though, he turns around in a huff, expression completely changed. "Oh, but don't go thinking that your cute, clueless behavior will get you out of my shit-list if you so much as speak to YunHo about my nasty Muggle habit, capisce?" JaeJoong narrows his eyes at ChangMin. "Not a word, genius boy!"
As another one walks away from him, ChangMin lets out an annoyed sound. Damn these Slytherins and their half-assed answers and their need to have the last word!
----------
Still unwilling to let matters lay ChangMin contemplates the situation. He snorts, and lets his body fall to the bed. Damn, but dinner was a pain. YooChun and JaeJoong kept giving him those knowing smirks and it was just beyond annoying. He knows now the biggest flaw in his plan was asking those two about it. Of course they wouldn't give him a straight answer.
Tomorrow though, he knows just the guy to go to. As he covers his mouth with a tired movement of a hand, he's sure tomorrow he'll discover once and for all the reason why YooChun would send him flowers, even if it costs him his monthly allowance in sweets!
--------
ChangMin doesn't understand the appeal of soccer, and waking up an hour earlier than usual is almost too much trouble. He manages somehow to do so though, even as a slight bad mood lingers after he showers and eat - surely a left over from one too many confusing dreams and the memory of yesterday's frustrating conversations.
It's worked up to a complete foul mood by the time he reaches the outside of the castle and finds JunSu playing a game with the other Muggle-borns. He really doesn't get what's so much fun about the silly sport, being only a half-blood himself and raised completely immersed in the Wizarding Society. He knows about Muggle costumes and habits, but such things never brought him anything more than a passing interest, so he never researched deeply about them.
He studies the players with an irritated look and sits on the bleachers to wait for the end of the game. He remembers first when he met JunSu, and then later when YooChun and JaeJoong met him. He always thought they'd have a hard time accepting him, both being pureblood and from fairly old - and prejudiced - families, but they took a liking to the boy immediately, sometimes teasing the boy as it's in their nature, but not ever being outright mean to him. Once, catching JaeJoong in an exceptionally good mood, he asked for a reason to that behavior and got a most interesting answer - apparently, JunSu is just too cute to hate. Unbidden, an small smile blossoms on ChangMin's face at that thought memory. It had left him speechless then, but happy that his friends were getting along well.
Of course, the boy thinks amusedly, JunSu is terrible cute, and sweet. But oh, he does too have a big mischievous streak. Which is why ChangMin came prepared with an enormous bag of sweets that is now resting by his side.
The sound of the game ending interrupts his thoughts and ChangMin spots JunSu already making his way towards him. As he gets close to ChangMin, without even a proper hello, he immediately starts searching inside the bag for a Chocolate Frog. JunSu makes a happy sound when he finds it, and looks up gratefully at ChangMin, sitting by his side. "To what do I own this pleasure of your company so early in the morning?" He grins at the other boy, wiggling his eyebrows in emphasis. "You're finally here to ask me about the flowers?"
ChangMin's bad mood returns with a vengeance then, and with a hiss of annoyance he slaps his forehead. "Did those bloody Slytherins come spread lies to you about it already?"
Pausing mid-way into a bite and almost losing the Chocolate Frog in the process - the body of the sweet still eerily moving without a head - Junsu shoots ChangMin a concerned look. "No." He looks pensive for a second, than shakes his head. "No, they didn't come looking for me. The last time I spoke with them was yesterday during dinner. Same as you, no?"
An unhappy frown settles on his face and ChangMin suspiciously asks, "So how do you know about the flowers?"
JunSu lets out a little giggly, and if it weren't so endearing, ChangMin would've told him off for it - it's not a manly behavior at all! "Like the whole school doesn't already know about it, ChangMin? Everyone saw the owl delivering them." He munches on the chocolate a bit more until it stops moving completely. "Lunch is always the time the Hall is most crowd, and well, news travel fast around here." He turns his head to the side, watching the other players still around the area, completely missing ChangMin's narrowing gaze. "There's even a poll going on, hm. How long will it take for you to finally get it."
When JunSu finally catches ChangMin's darkening expression and see the hand already tightly gripping a wand, he hastens to explain. "Or some such silly thing. Really-" he adds, "-it's nothing to be upset about!"
With extreme control he didn't even know he possessed, ChangMin calmly gets up from the bench, and gives JunSu a tight smile, which really only comes off as a grimace. "And do you know who started this silly poll, JunSu?"
"Well." Biting his lip in worry, JunSu quietly answers, "I'm not sure. You know how these things are." Forgetting all about sweets, he too gets up and grips one of ChangMin's fisted hands in both of his. "ChangMin..." He starts waveringly, but continues bravely, once he catches the boy's gazes, "You're so very smart, I know, and you don't usually need advice from me, even though I'm older than you, but listen to me this once, okay?"
Quietly, ChangMin lowers his head, eyes falling to the ground - listening but keeping to his own stubborn ways.
"I know you want to figure it out on your own, so I'll just say this: don't let your own prejudices stop you from seeing what is right in front of your nose." JunSu chuckles when ChangMin looks up, affronted and already with a reply on the tip of his tongue. "No arguing with me, ChangMin. Remember you came to ask my opinion, hm."
ChanMing tilts his head to the side, a deep sigh escaping his lips. He pulls his hand to himself, and crosses his arms, still upset - but not quite so much. JunSu's presence always has that cheering effect on him. "So what you're saying is that I'm looking for answers I already have?"
Intently looking at the boy for a minute, JunSu smiles. "If you want to put it that way, yes. And-" turning his back to the boy and searching inside the bag once more, he takes out a Blood Lollipop and gives it to ChangMin. "-don't forget that gifts are symbols. Like you bringing me sweets."
Beaming, JunSu closes the bag, and starts making his way once more to the pitch where he can see some of his friends calling to him. "And sharing is caring too!" He lets out a giggle when ChangMin rolls his eyes. "Don't forget to reciprocate, ChangMin!"
Looking up to the sky, ChangMin's expression of long suffering goes unnoticed. He throws his arms to the sky, and starts walking back to the castle, silently asking why JunSu's friendly Hufflepuff nature has to be so clichéd.
----------
ChangMin doesn't manage to take two steps inside the door, when he sees all the students mingling about turn to him and stare. For a couple of seconds that's all they do, and then they are whispering to each other, and there's a uncomfortable buzz ringing in ChangMin's ears. He scowls, crosses his arms once more in a defensive posture and quicken his steps until he's climbed already three flights of stairs and there's no one else around.
He looks around suspiciously for a moment and then with a loud sigh sits heavily on the steps. Pulling his knees to himself, ChangMin lets his head fall down and rest on top of them as another deep sigh escapes his lips.
That is how YunHo finds him a few minutes later - in such a depressive position.
----------
"Ah! So there you are! I've been looking everywhere for you!" The sudden voice is a bit startling, but ChangMin doesn't let it show. Slowly, he lifts his head to find YunHo in front of him, an enormous grin on his face that immediately falls at ChangMin's blank stare.
A concerned frown appears on YunHo's face as he settles beside ChangMin. Worried about his state of mind, he lightly rests his hand on ChangMin's shoulder. The other boy continues to stare forward, seemingly not paying attention to anything, and carefully YunHo asks, "Is this by any chance related to the Flowers Incident?" By the sudden tensing of ChangMin's frame he's sure that is the case.
YunHo crosses his arms then, assuming a rigid posture, and resignedly thinks why must it be him always the one to deal with these situations. Not a few seconds after that, ChangMin is the one with both hands on his shoulder, shaking YunHo's whole body with almost too much violence.
"I just don't understand why in Merlin's name he's sending me flowers! I can't stop thinking about him now and I know he's a Slytherin and that you just can't trust that lot, but why would he be doing something like this and-", with a harsh last shake ChangMin lets YunHo go, only to quickly grab his own hair in two fistfuls, "-I just don't fucking understand!"
Both of YunHo's eyebrows raise when he hears ChangMin curse, and for one fleeting moment he's too cursing YooChun inside his own head, but then it looks like the boy's about to cry in frustration and YunHo has more pressing matters to take care of. Slowly, he takes ChangMin's hands from his hair and the boy, emotionally exhausted, let's him. Drawing ChangMin into an embrace, YunHo teasingly asks, "You do know I'm dating one of those Slytherins myself, hm, ChangMin?"
When that fails to prompt a response from the boy, YunHo lets a resigned sigh escape his lips and pulls ChangMin's face up, forcefully catching the boy's gaze with his own. "Enough with the pity party. If you need advice, I'm probably the one you should be asking for anyway. You should have looked for me in the first place, you know that, right?"
A meek nod is all ChangMin gives, unable to do anything more in face of YunHo's serious stare. He lowers his eyes to the ground and waits for the unavoidably chewing he'll receive. After a few tense moments - waiting was never ChangMin's thing - he looks up again, only to find YunHo smiling gently at him.
"Come on, ChangMin. I'm not going to scold you. That would be a bit hypocrite of me, no?" And then ChangMin remembers when YunHo and JaeJoong first started their relationship, how similar to the situation he finds himself in now it was, how YunHo completely freaked out and it took JaeJoong forever to convince the boy he was serious about his interest in him.
ChangMin's eyes widen in sudden realization. What a fool he was making himself to be not seeing thing as what they really were! All this time thinking it was a prank when it was quite possible YooChun was really only interested in him.
Quickly getting up and making his way downstairs, ChangMin turns back for only a second to thank YunHo. He catches YunHo shouted "You're welcome, brat!" and satisfied smirk, connecting that to JaeJoong obvious influence over the boy - but really, at least there was something to be said about a Gryffindor’s honesty.
----------
Finding YooChun takes some work, and ChangMin's almost giving up for the day when he stumbles upon the other boy quietly talking to JaeJoong just outside one of the classroom's door. He freezes and JaeJoong sees him first. The boy whispers something against YooChun's ears, and smirking at ChangMin, turns his back and make his way down the hall to what ChangMin knows to be the Slytherins' dormitory.
Lost in a flashback for a moment, remembering how eerily alike in behavior YunHo and JaeJoong were turning to be, ChangMin only realizes he's alone with YooChun when the other chuckles and starts heading in his direction. Suddenly worried, ChangMin backs a few steps until he can no more, his body connecting with the wall and making a muffled sound.
The smirk on YooChun's face looks completely different from YunHo's and JaeJoong's, ChangMin thinks, but then it turns into a satisfied grin, and YooChun's arms close around his body, and ChangMin stops thinking altogether. YooChun presses him against the wall and kisses him lightly at first. He rests his lips on ChangMin's for a few seconds, giving the boy ample opportunity to flee, before he turns the kiss more serious. Gasping, ChangMin lets YooChun do as he wishes and tries to reciprocate as best as he knows how to.
When they part - and sanity returns to ChangMin's mind - he sighs against YooChun's neck, and stops the boy before he even opens his mouth, putting any fears to rest. "I'm a bloody fool, I know. And no need to ask, but yeah, I'm willing to give this a go."
YooChun's only response is another chuckle and a whispered "Good" before he kisses ChangMin again.
----------
They spend the good part of an hour like that, ChangMin realizes, when his stomachs makes a loud noise and they are forced to separate. He casts a quick spell to show the time only to discover that dinner hour has long past.
YooChun eyes him speculatively and ChangMin makes smiles sheepishly before saying, "If you had given me chocolates instead of flowers we wouldn't even be in this situation."
Amused, YooChun takes one of ChangMin's hand and asks "Is that so, now? And why would that be?" and the boy grins, letting YooChun play with his fingers. "Because the way to a boy's heart is obviously through his stomach! And that-" he pokes YooChun on his side, smirking himself for the first time when other boy yelps, and continues, "-is why I'm the Ravenclaw here."
And never mind that he wasn't even smart enough to figure out YooChun's interest on his own.
